OBC vs NFO vs Air Charter

3 June 2026 · 5 min read · Critical Cargo

When cargo has to move urgently by air, there are three main ways to do it — and choosing the wrong one costs either money or precious hours. Here is how on-board courier, next flight out and air charter actually differ.

On-Board Courier (OBC)

With an on-board courier, a person travels with your shipment as accompanied baggage on a commercial flight. It is the fastest and most secure option, with a full chain of custody from collection to hand-over.

Best for: small, high-value, can't-fail shipments — AOG parts, prototypes, critical documents, sensitive samples.

Next Flight Out (NFO)

With Next Flight Out, your cargo travels on the soonest available commercial flight, but unaccompanied — booked into the aircraft hold as express freight. It is fast and more cost-effective than OBC, because you are not paying for a courier's time and travel.

Best for: urgent shipments that need speed but do not require a person beside them the whole way.

Air Charter

An air charter is a dedicated aircraft flown specifically for your cargo. It is the most powerful option — and the most expensive — but sometimes the only one that works.

Best for: large, heavy or oversized loads, or routes where no suitable commercial flight exists.

Quick comparison

How to choose

A simple rule of thumb: the smaller, more urgent and more sensitive the shipment, the more it leans towards OBC. The bigger and heavier it is, the more it leans towards charter. NFO sits in between, for when you need real speed without the cost of an escort.

In practice, the best providers will recommend the right mode for each situation rather than pushing one — because next time the answer might be different.

The bottom line

OBC, NFO and charter are tools for the same job: beating the clock. Knowing the difference means you ask for the right one under pressure — or better still, you have a partner who picks it for you in seconds.
